As we were enjoying the view from a shady bench, a totally blind man with a white cane suddenly appeared, as if lost. He began to tap his way alone across the hot sand, down to the water, attracted by the sound of the waves.

as if lost まるで道に迷ったかのように
tap his way (杖をつきながら)コツコツと歩く

Time stood still as several of us watched his determined solo journey, like a mirage through the rising heat. We were mesmerized, like the beginning of a good Hollywood film. Whose dream was this on such a hot afternoon? Finally we snapped out of it as he neared the water's edge. Noriko ran down to care for him, just as his friend also arrived.

Time stood still 時が静止した
determined 決然とした
mirage 蜃気楼
mesmerized 魅了される 催眠にかけられる
snapped out of 気を取り直す

He simply wanted to touch the waves that he could only hear. The two of them splashed the water with their hands and laughed like children and made their way back to the shade.

It was a fascinating scene to witness and after some thought, an interesting omen and allegory that reflects mankind's shift in consciousness now. The blind reaching out for something much greater that can only be felt or perhaps heard. It was an honor to have witnessed such an enactment.
